Sandblasting, or abrasive blasting, fires abrasive media at a surface with compressed air. It strips rust, mill scale and old coatings back to clean metal, and it leaves a slightly rough surface that primer and paint can grip. It is the difference between painting over a problem and starting again from bare steel.
The name is older than the method. Silica is a natural substance found in concrete, bricks, stone and sand, and WorkSafe New Zealand's guidance on silica dust says the harmful dust is created when a material containing silica is disturbed: blasting a concrete surface does it, and so does blasting with sand. That is why WorkSafe recommends alternatives such as metallic shot, slag products or grit instead of sand, and one reason blasting is a job for an operator with the right equipment.
A repaint only lasts as long as what is under it. If the old paint is flaking, if rust is creeping out from the edges and seams, or if a part has been repaired and has bare weld on it, blasting gives the new coating one clean, even surface to hold on to. For a truck or a machine that works in mud, effluent or fertiliser, that is what decides how long the paint lasts.
Freshly blasted steel is bare, and bare steel starts to rust again quickly. The coating should follow the blast without delay, which is why we offer sandblasting and painting together: the part is blasted, primed and painted as one job, by one business.
Trucks and machinery and their parts. That can be a whole truck or trailer, a machine, or a single part taken off it. We sandblast other things too, so if yours is not a truck or a machine, ask us. If blasting uncovers cracks or steel that has rusted through, we can repair it before the paint goes on: see truck, trailer and machinery repairs and steel fabrication.
Mobile means the blasting comes to the job, so a truck or a machine that is awkward to move can be done where it is. Tell us where the job is, what is around it and what access there is.
Blasting is dusty and it reaches everything nearby. Before work starts, anything that must not be blasted or painted has to come off or be masked: glass, rubber, hoses, bearings, wiring and data plates. Tell us what the item is, roughly how big it is, what state the old coating is in and what finish you want, and we can price it.
The size of the item, how heavy the rust and old coatings are, how easy it is to get at, and the paint that goes on afterwards. A part on a bench is quicker than a chassis with years of paint on it.
